The early years were difficult. The Coles sold their home and emptied their savings to keep the team running after selling only a handful of tickets in the first few months. On the field, the Bananas won three Coastal Plain League championships in 2016, 2021, and 2022. Off the field, the club began experimenting with entertainment-focused baseball as early as 2018, introducing Banana Ball as a separate, alternate-rules format alongside traditional games.

The League

The Banana Ball Championship League was formally founded in 2026 under commissioner and Bananas owner Jesse Cole, growing directly out of the Savannah Bananas’ own barnstorming tour. The league’s six teams are the Savannah Bananas, Party Animals, Firefighters, Texas Tailgaters, Loco Beach Coconuts, and Indianapolis Clowns.

The Clowns are a revival of the historic Negro league team of the same name, done in partnership with the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum.

The league plays under its own rule set rather than standard baseball rules. Games are decided by points scored per inning rather than total runs, there’s a two-hour time limit, bunting is banned, and batters can’t step out of the box.
